Giorgio Parisi
active c. 1948, Rome, Italy
Italian theoretical physicist, master of disordered systems — from spin glasses to climate and bird flocks.
Parisi researched at Sapienza Rome, famous for 'replica symmetry breaking' — the technique solving the Sherrington–Kirkpatrick spin glass that reveals an infinite tree of energy states. He also developed the Kardar–Parisi–Zhang equation for growing interfaces, the Altarelli–Parisi QCD rules, and studied starling flocks as collective systems.
Nobel-winning work
The 2021 Nobel recognized 'the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales': Parisi's replica-symmetry-breaking method for spin glasses proved new order emerges from chaos, with general mathematics applied from glasses and combinatorial optimization to neural networks and climate.
