Anton Zeilinger
active c. 1945, Ried im Innkreis, Austria
Austrian physicist, a leading figure in quantum entanglement — photon teleportation, quantum cryptography and multi-particle Bell tests.
Zeilinger's Vienna/Innsbruck groups performed the first photon state teleportation (1997), entanglement swapping, and Bell tests with events spanning kilometers closing the 'freedom-of-choice' loophole. He also demonstrated three-particle (GHZ) entanglement and intercontinental quantum encryption via satellite, turning the 'spookiness' Einstein doubted into technology.
Nobel-winning work
The 2022 Nobel honored Zeilinger for 'experiments with entangled photons, Bell violations and pioneering quantum information science': quantum state teleportation (1997) proved quantum information 'travels' without a physical particle; his multi-photon experiments laid foundations for quantum networks and photonic quantum computing.
