Problem 1

Two small spheres of equal mass mm hang from strings of length ll from the same point, initially touching. Each is given an equal charge qq; they repel and reach equilibrium at a small angle θ\theta from the vertical. Find qq in terms of mm, ll, θ\theta. Here g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\mathrm{m\,s^{-2}} and k=1/(4πϵ0)k=1/(4\pi\epsilon_0) is Coulomb’s constant; neglect sphere size relative to the center separation, so the repulsive force is horizontal and the two strings make symmetric angles θ\theta with the vertical. (a) Use force balance to find the electric force in terms of m,g,θm,g,\theta. (b) Express the center separation using l,θl,\theta and obtain the exact charge in terms of the given quantities. (c) For theta≪1\\theta\ll1 rad, derive the small-angle formula and check its dimensions.
FC=mgtan⁡θ,r=2lsin⁡θ,q=2lsin⁡θmgtan⁡θk≈2lθ3/2mgk\boxed{F_C=mg\tan\theta,\quad r=2l\sin\theta,\quad q=2l\sin\theta\sqrt{\frac{mg\tan\theta}{k}}\approx2l\theta^{3/2}\sqrt{\frac{mg}{k}}}

The exact result is checked against the small-angle limit; the quantity under the square root has units of charge squared.
