Problem 3

A small source emits a pure tone of frequency fsf_s in still air, where sound travels at speed cc. It moves uniformly straight toward a stationary listener at speed vs<cv_s<c; neglect reflections and wind. (a) During one emission period, determine the spacing between successive wavefronts in front of the source. (b) Find the frequency fof_o heard by the listener. (c) Find the limits of fof_o as vs→0v_s\to0 and vs→c−v_s\to c^-, explaining why an approaching source raises the frequency.
fo=cλfrontf_o=\frac{c}{\lambda_{\rm front}}

The listener is stationary in the air, so crests arrive at sound speed cc. Arrival frequency is crest speed divided by crest spacing.
