Problem 3

A metal of work function W0W_0 is illuminated by monochromatic light of frequency ff; photoemission occurs only if a photon has enough energy. Let Planck's constant be hh, the electron charge magnitude be ee, and define positive stopping voltage VsV_s as the voltage just sufficient to stop the fastest electron. (a) Find threshold frequency f0f_0. (b) Express maximum kinetic energy Kmax⁡K_{\max} in terms of ff and give the emission condition. (c) Find VsV_s and describe the slope and intercept of a plot of VsV_s versus ff on the emission range.
eVs=Kmax⁡eV_s=K_{\max}

The retarding field removes energy eVseV_s from the fastest electron. At the stopping threshold its entire initial kinetic energy is removed.
