Problem 3

Monochromatic light of wavelength λ\lambda is incident normally on a transmission grating of spacing d=3λd=3\lambda with many narrow parallel slits per unit length. Neglect absorption and consider principal maxima; angle θ\theta is measured from the straight-through direction. (a) State the maximum condition and find the first-order angle. (b) List all observable orders and the largest order. (c) For a screen a distance LL from the grating, find the transverse position y1y_1 of the first-order maximum using exact geometry.
sin⁡θ1=λd=13,θ1=arcsin⁡13\sin\theta_1=\frac{\lambda}{d}=\frac13,\quad \theta_1=\arcsin\frac13

Set m=1m=1 and use d=3λd=3\lambda. A real angle exists because the sine ratio is below one.
