Problem 3

A thin converging lens in air has focal length f=20 cmf=20\,\mathrm{cm}, and a real upright object of height H=2.0 cmH=2.0\,\mathrm{cm} is placed u=30 cmu=30\,\mathrm{cm} in front of it. Use the Cartesian convention in which a real object has positive uu and a real image has positive vv, so 1/f=1/u+1/v1/f=1/u+1/v; neglect lens thickness. (a) Find the image distance vv. (b) Determine whether the image is real or virtual and upright or inverted. (c) Find its signed magnification and height.
v=60 cm,m=−2,H′=−4.0 cm (real,inverted)\boxed{v=60\,\mathrm{cm},\quad m=-2,\quad H'=-4.0\,\mathrm{cm}\ (real, inverted)}

Collect the results for all parts in one place. This makes clear that they use the same data and a consistent sign convention.
